There can be a point where your songwriting becomes based more on 'theory wankery' than on writing a good song. I think there's a balance to be struck here. After all, in the end, if it sounds good, that's all that really matters. It's like that with a lot of "self-taught" people. It's like how there are people who just do math in their head and never learned the "right" way to do it, and when they're told to show their work, they're at a loss. For others, who are more tactile and experiential, it's not the best thing. For some, music theory helps tremendously. There is no such thing as one right way to approach the guitar. It's through experimentation and discovery that my style remains original. I found that "discovering" various chords and whatnot over the years has kept the guitar as fascinating to me and I fear that if I knew every chord and scale, then my creativity would suffer rather than be enhanced. My playing is not technical, but, like Neil, I pour emotion into it. I've been playing for about 31 years and I never learned music theory or took a lesson. They are incredible musicians, at an amazing level. Satriani and Eddie Van Halen are guitar geniuses. When I see that, I go «Holy shit, that's really something». On the other hand, I appreciate really great guitarists, and I'm very impressed by those metal groups with their scale guitarists. I think about it on another level, I don't care about that sort of shit. I know that most of the notes I play aren't where I play them. The technical aspect is absolute hogwash as far as I'm concerned. When you are able to express yourself and feel good, then you know why you're playing. It's whether you have feelings that you want to express with music, that's what counts, really. Nobody gives a shit if you have good technique or not. NEIL : "It would give you a rather sad view of your future, wouldn't it? First off, nobody cares if you know how to play scales. Q : "What do you think about those who go to school to learn how to play guitar?" I stumbled upon an interview between Neil and Guitare & Claviers Magazine (1992) Neil stated his opinion on "learning" the guitar, what do you guys think about this subject? I was doing some research on Neil and the types of guitars/tones he uses.
